Interstate Beautification - I-40 Wolf River to Brownsville. This was one of the first TDOT beautification projects championed by Lady Bird Johnson and was 45 miles in length. Probably the second large project in our history, it was $90,000 on 1960 dollars. Primarily interchange tree planting with thousands of daylily bulbs, most of these have been removed. The thousands of seedlings planted in the “regeneration” areas are still visible today because, in order to count them at replacement time and for ease of mowing, we planted them in straight rows ten feet apart but varied the spacing in the row to make them look natural by the passing motorist. Now that the trees are larger and naturally “limbed up”, the rows are quite evident.
